Volunteers are needed to help with registration, judging at food stops, route watching, event photography and aquatic assistance. Sign up to volunteer through the DeVour Des Moines webpage! Devour Des Moines is an eating/triathlon event to raise awareness for buying local food and living an active lifestyle. All proceeds will go to the Greater Des Moines Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaign, which is dedicated to connecting the Greater Des Moines community to local farm-fresh food as a means to supporting a healthier population and promoting economic growth. The campaign is a network of local farms, food businesses and consumers who are committed to increasing the production and sale of fresh, local foods here in central Iowa. They strive to put more local foods on the table by getting the word out about availability and accessibility of local foods. They also work to link local farms to consumers, either directly via farmers markets, farm stands, Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) or buying clubs, or indirectly through local restaurants, markets and co-ops. They do this by publishing a local directory as well as an online newsletter, engaging and educating eaters, and promoting marketing outlets that help put fresh, local foods on central Iowa plates. The campaign primarily serves the following nine counties: Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Polk, Story, and Warren. |
